Introduced in 1977 and produced through 1984 across two distinct generations, the Honda Odyssey FL250 pioneered the single-seat off-road dune buggy category. Engineered as a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle with a protective steel roll cage, wrist-restraint safety harness, and steering yoke controls, the FL250 was powered by a mid-mounted 248 cc two-stroke engine paired with a V-belt automatic torque converter transmission. While early models (1977–1980) featured a rigid rear axle and trailing arm front suspension, the second-generation FL250 (1981–1984) introduced structural improvements including standard 12V electrical systems, high-mounted headlights, capacitor discharge ignition (CDI), and enhanced steering geometry.

Produced for the 1985 model year, the Honda Odyssey FL350R was a ground-up redesign that addressed the chassis and performance limitations of the earlier FL250. Featuring a powerful 342 cc (later revised to 329 cc) two-stroke engine, the FL350R introduced full four-wheel independent suspension—utilizing dual trailing arms upfront and a diagonal link-type rear suspension with gas-charged shocks. Additionally, the FL350R incorporated electric starting, dual front hydraulic drum brakes, a single hydraulic rear disc brake, and a forward/neutral/reverse transmission, elevating the single-seat off-road buggy concept before giving way to the Honda FL400 Pilot.
