First introduced in 1985 with the VN700A, the Kawasaki Vulcan (VN) Series represents Kawasaki's comprehensive family of cruiser and touring motorcycles. Spanning over four decades of production, the VN designation covers a wide spectrum of displacements—from mid-sized twin-cylinder street cruisers to massive open-class heavyweight baggers and dressers. Characterized by classic American cruiser styling paired with Japanese engineering reliability, the VN lineup transitioned from air-cooled and early liquid-cooled V-twins to massive big-bore V-twin engines featuring liquid cooling, electronic fuel injection, belt drive, and advanced touring technology.

Kawasaki utilized specific sub-family suffixes across the VN series to denote body styles, factory accessories, and trim levels:

• VN: Vulcan V-twin / parallel-twin cruiser platform baseline
• Classic: Traditional cruiser styling featuring valanced fenders, spoked or cast wheels, and floorboards
• Custom / Special: Factory-custom factory choppers or drag bikes with skinny front wheels, drag bars, and blacked-out components
• Drifter: 1940s Indian-inspired retro styling with deep, fully skirted fenders
