First introduced in 1978 and produced continuously through 2021, the Yamaha SR400 is an enduring classic street bike renowned for its mechanical purity and timeless aesthetic. Originally derived from the XT500 dual-sport platform to meet Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) 400 cc licensing tiers, the SR400 retained a strict kickstart-only design throughout its entire 43-year production run. Built around a steel semi-double-cradle frame that uniquely uses its downtubes as the dry-sump engine's oil reservoir, the SR400 evolved subtly over the decades—adding a front hydraulic disc brake in place of its original drum, and adopting electronic fuel injection and a 3-way catalytic converter in 2010—remaining a beloved favorite for daily urban riding and custom motorcycle builders worldwide.
