Produced from 1991 through 1999, the Yamaha XTZ 660 Ténéré was a dedicated adventure dual-sport motorcycle named after the famous desert stage of the Paris–Dakar Rally. Replacing the air-cooled XT600Z, the XTZ 660 introduced Yamaha's liquid-cooled 659 cc SOHC single-cylinder engine featuring a five-valve cylinder head layout for improved high-rpm power and heat management. Built around a heavy-duty steel diamond frame with a 20-litre fuel tank, long-travel suspension, and high-mounted exhaust, it was updated in 1994 with a sleek dual-round-headlight fairing styled after the twin-cylinder Super Ténéré 750. Recognized for its mechanical durability and long-distance capability, it served as a crucial bridge between Yamaha's classic air-cooled thumpers and the later fuel-injected XT660Z generation.
