Produced from 1982 through 1983, the Yamaha XZ 550 (sold in North America as the Vision) was an innovative mid-displacement sport-touring motorcycle ahead of its time. Powered by a liquid-cooled 552 cc DOHC 70-degree V-twin engine featuring four valves per cylinder and counter-rotating balance shafts, it produced 64 horsepower and delivered smooth, high-revving performance. The XZ 550 was packed with advanced engineering for the era, including Yamaha's YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System), twin Mikuni downdraft carburetors, an enclosed shaft final drive, and a low-maintenance, sharp-edged angular fairing style. Despite its sophisticated technical setup and enthusiastic press, a short production lifespan turned the Vision into a distinctive classic among early 1980s Japanese sport-tourers.
