Honda CX500 Adventure Bike Build: A Classic V-Twin Transformed

The Honda CX500 might not be the first motorcycle that comes to mind for an adventure bike build. Originally designed as a practical road motorcycle, its unusual transverse V-twin engine and shaft drive make it an unlikely off-road candidate.

But this remarkable 1982 Honda CX500 adventure bike, transformed by BJ English of Brick House Builds in Missouri, proves that creativity and careful engineering can turn an unconventional motorcycle into a capable adventure-inspired machine.

From Honda CX500 to Adventure Motorcycle

The project began with a partially dismantled 1982 CX500 Custom. Its owner wanted a motorcycle capable of joining friends on adventure rides, without the expense of purchasing an entirely different bike.

Rather than building a purely cosmetic scrambler, Brick House Builds concentrated on practical modifications that would improve ground clearance, suspension performance, protection and carrying capacity.

Upgraded Suspension, Wheels and Tyres

One of the biggest challenges was giving the CX500 enough ground clearance for rougher terrain.

The original front suspension was replaced with 37mm forks and yokes from a 1983 Honda FT500. At the rear, a pair of 370mm YSS shock absorbers originally intended for a Yamaha XT500 helped raise the motorcycle.

The builder retained Honda's distinctive Comstar wheel design but converted the rear to a 17-inch wheel using components from a Honda Goldwing. Combined with the existing 19-inch front wheel, the result provides approximately 11 inches (280mm) of ground clearance beneath the engine.

Upgrading motorcycle suspension components and selecting suitable adventure motorcycle tyres are important considerations for any machine intended to venture beyond sealed roads.

Protecting the CX500 V-Twin Engine

The CX500's distinctive liquid-cooled V-twin engine remains at the heart of the build. To prepare it for adventure riding, the builder fitted substantial crash bars and a protective sump guard.

The engine also received a thorough service, including replacement water pump seals, intake components and O-rings. The carburettors and starter clutch were rebuilt, while the original airbox was replaced with foam filters.

A custom two-into-one exhaust system with a Cone Engineering muffler completes the mechanical transformation.

For riders preparing a motorcycle for more demanding use, motorcycle protection parts such as suitable bash plates and crash protection can help reduce exposure to damage from rocks, debris and unexpected impacts.

Built for Practical Adventure Riding

The finishing touches make it clear that this CX500 was intended to be ridden, not simply displayed.

Wide ProTaper handlebars, folding mirrors, an aftermarket speedometer and enduro-style footpegs provide a more adventure-oriented riding setup.

A removable luggage rack allows additional equipment to be carried, while an auxiliary one-gallon fuel container extends the bike's touring potential. A compact tool bag and additional luggage mounting points add further practicality.

What Makes This CX500 Adventure Build Special?

The most interesting aspect of this build is that it does not attempt to turn the CX500 into a modern adventure motorcycle. Instead, it works around the Honda's unusual engineering and makes practical improvements where they matter most.

The combination of increased ground clearance, improved suspension, engine protection and touring equipment produces a motorcycle with a distinctive character and a clear purpose.

It is also a reminder that thoughtful modifications can breathe new life into older motorcycles. Whether restoring a classic or preparing a bike for touring, choosing appropriate motorcycle accessories can make a meaningful difference to everyday usability.

Of course, converting an older road bike for off-road use requires careful attention to braking, suspension geometry, structural integrity and legal compliance. Major modifications should be assessed by suitably qualified professionals.

This Honda CX500 adventure build shows that an unconventional starting point, combined with practical engineering and a clear vision, can produce a genuinely memorable custom motorcycle.
