The Yamaha YZ250 two-stroke is best known as a motocross machine, but this striking flat-track conversion shows just how versatile the legendary 250cc platform can be.
Built by Italian racer Lorenzo Buratti, this custom Yamaha YZ250 flat tracker combines a rebuilt two-stroke engine, FMF exhaust, modified suspension and distinctive vintage-inspired bodywork. Even more impressive, the entire project was completed on a modest budget.
Turning a Yamaha YZ250 Into a Flat Tracker
Lorenzo wanted a competitive, enjoyable racing motorcycle without spending a fortune. The YZ250 offered an ideal starting point thanks to its powerful two-stroke engine, relatively simple mechanical design and availability on the used motorcycle market.
Rather than pursuing maximum horsepower, the build focuses on making the motorcycle suitable for flat-track racing, where predictable power delivery, traction and controlled slides are especially important.
Five Standout Features of This YZ250 Build
1. Rebuilt 250cc Two-Stroke Engine
The YZ250 engine was extensively rebuilt using genuine Yamaha replacement parts. Internally, the engine remains in standard specification rather than relying on expensive performance modifications.
The YZ250 already delivers strong low-end performance and rapid throttle response, making it a capable platform for racing when correctly set up.

2. FMF Exhaust for Smoother Power Delivery
Lorenzo fitted an FMF exhaust system, selecting an enduro-style expansion chamber rather than a motocross-focused pipe.
The objective was to soften the aggressive power delivery and create a more manageable response when accelerating through corners.

3. Suspension Adapted for Flat-Track Racing
The original YZ250 suspension was modified with firmer fork and shock springs.
Motocross suspension is designed to absorb jumps and rough terrain, while flat-track racing places different demands on chassis balance, cornering and traction.

4. Custom 19-Inch Flat-Track Wheels
Lorenzo retained the original Yamaha wheel hubs but fitted new rims specifically suited to flat-track racing.
The front wheel measures 19 x 2.5 inches, while the rear is 19 x 3.0 inches. Both are fitted with Maxxis DTR flat-track racing tyres.
This combination gives the motorcycle the distinctive flat-track silhouette while providing tyres designed for the demands of dirt oval racing.
5. Vintage-Inspired Fibreglass Bodywork
Perhaps the most distinctive feature is the motorcycle's custom bodywork. Lorenzo started with a reproduction fibreglass body intended for a classic Ducati racing motorcycle.
He extensively reshaped it to fit the Yamaha frame, using additional fibreglass to achieve the desired proportions.
The frame was painted black and the seat supports lowered by approximately one inch. Clean, understated graphics complete the transformation, replacing the busy appearance usually associated with modern motocross bikes.
A Custom Race Bike on a Budget
One of the most impressive aspects of the project is its cost. According to the original 2012 Bike EXIF feature, Lorenzo spent approximately €3,000, including the purchase of the donor motorcycle.
That was a remarkably modest investment for a purpose-built custom racer, particularly given the engine rebuild, suspension changes and specialised wheels. It is a historical build figure, not an estimate of what the same conversion would cost today.
Maintaining or Modifying Your Yamaha YZ250
While a complete flat-track conversion requires specialist knowledge, maintaining a YZ250's engine, suspension and drivetrain can provide worthwhile improvements without major custom fabrication.
